I'm Am Now A Slim Shady Fan

http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/02/24/eminems-potentially-industry-changing-digital-royalties-suit-goes-to-trial/

Although I have never REALLY dug his music, I have always respected Eminem's push to "kick it to the man". I have always been a supporter of artists that want to et their due. Although it shouldn't all be about money, I feel that large labels and corporate America take advantage of the artistic point of view of artists. I believe that it shouldn't be about money, but when there is money to be made, it should be distributed fairly and just fully.
I really hope that Eminem and his label win this dispute. It will definitely have other artists thinking and getting what they deserve. Granted, it will also have these large companies rethinking their business structure, as they will try to survive and still make a lot of money. With that said, though, they will reconstruct it and it will benefit artists. Kudos to Eminem and let's all root for his case to come to a victorious conclusion.

Article 1 : NARIP Announces 2009 Best in the Biz Winners

http://www.send2press.com/newswire/2009-02-0203-004.shtml

This article was very interesting to me, as well as pertinent to our class. As a music business class, in one way or another, we aspire to "be" those names and companies on those lists. These are the people and companies, etc who are getting recognition for being the best at what they do.
Most of the names are "under the radar"/ "behind the scenes" people that typically do not get recognition, but these are the people that do a lot of work to make the music industry the great industry it is.
I was surprised to see Billboard as the overwhelming winner of "Best Source Of Music Business News"and I think it's interesting Timbaland was nominated for 'Best Music Producer". I was not surprised Rick Rubin won that won. I look forward to researching who some of these people are and seeing why they are recognized for the best at what they do.

Album of the Year

So, as we learned last semester, live music is where the industry is striving. This works out great for me because I want to learn about and eventually work in the production of live music post-college. I don't really recognize with a scene, but if I did, it would easily be the Jam Scene.
Keller Williams has been a big name in the jam scene for the last decade or so. He is known for his creative one-man show where he plays a unique form of acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass many percussion instuments and other electronic musical instruments. Although he has played with different bands, such as the String Cheese Incident (known as The Keller Williams Incident) and a blue grass band, covering The Grateful Dead catalog. For the first time, though, Keller decided to tour with a funky jam band behind him.
Keller Williams with Mosely, Droll and Stipe is my album of the year because it showcases the great live production (including recording) of the jam scene. The band is made up of the bassist from the String Cheese Incident (Keith Mosely), Trey Anastacio and former Phil Lesh's drummer (Droll) and Greg Stipe of the Greg stipe band on guitar. I had the oppertunity to see this band in New York City and was very excited when they relased an album from their tour. They perform soem of Keller's songs and jam them out really well. There are some songs featuring a nice horn section, and top to bottom, no album (live or studio) came out that can match up with Keller Williams with Mosely, Droll and Sipe.
